At just 12 years old, Daya took part in his first international volunteer experience with Project Angkor in the Kingdom of Cambodia. This camp marked the beginning of his journey into global service, working alongside healthcare professionals to support communities with limited access to medical care.
Supporting the Clinic Operations
Daya played a key role as a “runner” in the clinic, assisting with organizing patient information, guiding people to the right stations, and helping ensure that clinic operations ran smoothly. His youthful energy and eagerness to learn made him an invaluable part of the team.
Building Connections and Making Friends
Aside from the clinic duties, Daya enjoyed connecting with the local kids in the village. With balloon animals and playful moments, he helped create a welcoming atmosphere, bridging cultural differences and forming bonds with the children.
Receiving a Monk’s Blessing
One of the most memorable moments was receiving a traditional blessing from a local monk. The experience was deeply meaningful, serving as a symbol of gratitude and mutual respect between Daya and the Cambodian community he was there to serve.
Assisting in the Nursing Department
Working closely with his mom in the nursing department, Daya gained hands-on experience and insight into the medical field. He assisted with organizing supplies, keeping records, and offering support wherever it was needed. This experience ignited a passion for service that he continues to carry.
Adventures Beyond the Camp
During his free time, Daya got to experience Cambodia’s unique culture, from tuk-tuk rides through the vibrant streets to exploring local markets and sharing laughter with fellow volunteers. These moments of exploration and camaraderie made his first volunteer camp truly unforgettable.
Daya’s time with Project Angkor wasn’t just about learning new skills but also about developing a deeper appreciation for global communities. His journey in Cambodia instilled values of compassion, resilience, and teamwork—qualities that continue to inspire his passion for service today.
